30 imagesThe series is a meditation about the nature of time and the fleeting moments represented by waves. The title to the series came from the observation of a colleague who is an astronomer. He urged me to search images of large galactic structures as they closely resembled these ocean waves. While they looked similar, the time scale within which they existed was incomprehensibly different. From mere seconds to billions of years, these forms give scale to our existence.
15 imagesMelanie Anaya is one of the many boxers from the Coachella Boxing Club. She is 26 and the mother of a young daughter. At 4’10” she is a force of nature. Melanie, along with Chris Monroe, the Caballero brothers, and their father Marco, represent the hundreds of boxers that have benefited from the kindness, caring, and determination of Lee Espinosa. The name Coachella is mostly associated with an annual music festival, legendary performers, and upscale events. However, it is also the name of a city that ranks as one of the ten poorest in California with personal income being the third lowest. In a place where life can be especially tough, Lee Espinosa has channeled that toughness into building a community of boxers. At the Coachella Boxing Club people can get a start, they can improve their skills, or they can look for a second chance. Lee takes everyone who wants to try. He has been impacting lives one punch at a time.
12 imagesBeginning in 2007/08 the economy collapsed into a deep economic recession. This series uses images of a bleak landscape devoid of people to illustrate the feelings of despair that permeated the country.
7 imagesThis project came about through a collaboration between Alexandria and myself at a workshop. She is an accomplished actor and artist. We discussed establishing a story of a woman waiting for someone and then being left alone. What would she be feeling? How could that feeling be seen? The shoot took place in and around Bombay Beach and Indio in California. The desolation of these locales provided an environment of loneliness, feelings of isolation, and a sense of abandonment that came with waiting.
